WHAT TO PREPARE FOR ENDOSCOPY?
An endoscopy is a day procedure with no overnight hospitalisation required. Prior to the procedure, you will be advised on what to prepare, which may include the following:
- Stop food and drink intake for several hours beforehand
- Take laxatives and/or use an enema to clean out your bowels for a colonoscopy
- Stop certain medications like blood thinning medications several days before the procedure
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER ENDOSCOPY?
You may stay in a recovery room for observation for 1 to 2 hours, after which you can be discharged home. As endoscopies are typically performed under sedation, it is best to have someone accompany you home after the procedure. It is common for you to experience mild and temporary postoperative effects which will resolve within a few days.
Your surgeon will also discuss findings and further treatment plan with you. If polyps were removed, or biopsies were performed, a subsequent follow-up will be arranged for reviewing of results.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF ENDOSCOPY?
As a minimally invasive procedure with low risk of major complications, endoscopy is safe and painless. While every precaution to ensure that the procedure site is safe will be taken, the risk of bleeding is possible, albeit very small and generally is of no major concern.
